Week 1 Lecture Pod – Introduction to Interactive Design

Summary

Week one’s lecture pod was an introduction to what Interactions and Interactive Design are. Bill Verplank’s video clip helped to give insight into what interaction design is, by stating three questions that interactive designers have to answer before they design: how do you do, how do you feel and how do you know. The person being designed for does something and interactive designers provide suggestions on how they may interact with the product. The role of an interactive designer involves many different types of designs; interaction design doesn’t happen without information design, information architect, graphic design or interface design. In Gillian’s Crampton’s interview clip, she talks about how an interactive designer should be clear, direct and have all possibilities laid out when designing and how when designing, designing how it behaves is most important than look. It is important to know where you are in a system, what you cna do next, where you can go and what’s going to happen when you’ve gone there. Overall, it is important to understand the audience first before designing a meaningful experience for others, as interactive design is about experience and through these interactions knowledge and wisdom can occur.

Reflection

I think the most important aspect of the lecture pod I think was Bill Verplank’s interview. I think this was the most important part as it showcases how these questions can affect the interactive’s designers approach to their work; the person they’re designing  for does something and they provide the suggestions on how they may interact. This interview was very insightful for me and gave me another perspective on interatcive design and from his interview I understood the topic more.
